Our History

Murphy Hill Baptist Church is rooted in a deep heritage of faith, sacrifice, and commitment to the community. As we reflect on our beginnings, we give thanks to the faithful men and women who, many years ago, recognized the spiritual needs of their small community and took steps to establish a place of worship. Like the psalmist, we acknowledge, “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4).

The story of Murphy Hill Baptist Church begins in August 1930, when Gladstone Missionary Baptist Church was organized at what is now the intersection of Pulaski Pike and Patterson Lane in Toney, Alabama. The church was founded under the leadership of Rev. J. D. Carroll, its first pastor. In its earliest years, the church served not only Baptists but also provided a place of worship for several denominations within the Gladstone community.

In the fall of 1934, the congregation began construction of a new church building on land generously donated by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Murphy. With this move, the church was renamed Murphy Hill Baptist Church. This site remains the home of Murphy Hill Baptist Church today.

By the spring of 1935, the first services were held in the new building. In those early days, worship services were held only twice a month, yet the congregation's devotion was strong.

Since those humble beginnings, Murphy Hill Baptist Church has experienced many changes and much growth. Today, the church offers a variety of Sunday School classes for all age groups, along with ministries that nurture children, youth, and families. God has richly blessed this church, and we gladly affirm, “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad” (Psalm 126:3).

As we look ahead, Murphy Hill Baptist Church stands on the threshold of a significant milestone—nearly 100 years of gospel ministry. Approaching our centennial is both a celebration of God’s faithfulness and a call to renewed dedication. We stand encouraged by the promise, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

With gratitude for the past and confidence in God’s leading for the future, we remain committed to serving the spiritual needs of our community. As we carry forward the legacy entrusted to us, we do so with hope, believing that “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). Our prayer is that future generations will look back with the same gratitude we feel today for those who faithfully served the Lord before us.
